Black Friday

While the term "Black Friday" sounds dark and dreary, it is one of my favorite days of the year. As a retail therapy patient, Black Friday opens doors for me - doors to amazing sales, comic scenes as people act like a certain toy is the path to oxygen, and the official first day of real christmas shopping.

For those who are still clueless, Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. The day when stores entice customers in at obscenely early hours to buy deals that most shoppers just can't resist.

My first Black Friday was 3 years ago. I lived in a little townhome with my husband and 3 little children - they were 11months old, 3 years old, and 5 years old. My husband was working at his first real out-of-college job. A neighbor, my SIL and I decided we were going to attempt Black Friday ... at Walmart. We knew the merchandise would be on the floor at 5am, so we headed out at 3:30am ... arriving to a very empty store. We were the first ones there, planting ourselves in front of the flat filled with Cabbage Patch babies for a ridiculously low price. 5am that morning is a time I will never forget - the surge of adrenaline as hundreds of hands pushed and shoved to snatch the toys, sometimes even from my hands!

I've gone every year since ... the 2nd year I was with my mother, and we went to Khols, and I learned that you can have some really fun conversations with your line-neighbors while you wait for 80 minutes to check out. Last year, I went alone ... to shopko. I stood in the cold wind, 35th in line, jealous of those who had brought hot chocolate with them ... but the cold was worth it, since I was the 2nd person to the pile of a certain toy I was there to get.

Now comes my 4th year of this tradition. I don't know where I'm going yet, or what I'm looking for. I just keep stalking the ads as they are released and posted on Black Friday @ Gotta Deal.  I completely love looking through all the deals, wondering if an ad will jump out, calling my name.

All is fair in love and war ... and on Black Friday.  ;)
